PHOENIX -

A helicopter crew rescued an injured hiker after he fell nearly 30 feet today from South Mountain Park.

Hikers found the man after hearing him moaning in pain.

But this wasn't an easy rescue. Crews had a tough time getting to the man because of steep slopes on the mountain.

"the importance of having this helicopter was a big deal in the fact that was the only way to extract him due to the fact that we had limited access, the terrain was very steep and we did not have a hoist operated helicopter at the time," said Larry Nunez, Phoenix Fire Department.

Firefighters say this is one of the most difficult types of rescues on the mountain.

"It seems a lot of people go off trail when they shouldn't. This is probably the third helicopter I've seen in the last month getting somebody off the trails," said hiker Tina Tretter.

The hiker suffered a head injury. Paramedics took him to the hospital in serious condition.
