FOXe Report: Something stinks!

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

This FOXe report investigates the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Facility, better known as the Detroit Incinerator. Neighbors are concerned about the amount of pollution the building gives off, but also the undeniable and unconcealable foul stench.

Most of Detroit's trash is burned in this facility, which is the largest of its kind in the world. An estimated 28 hundred tons of trash are burned here every day.

Since 2011 the facility's owners have received nine notices of violation from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Right now the emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, is reviewing bids from 10 companies interested in taking over waste management in Detroit. A recommendation for a five-year contract is expected by early October.

But neighbors around the incinerator don't want to wait that long for change.

A panel discussion will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17th, from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Activities building on Rivard St. Representatives from the state are expected to be there to ask questions and determine the next steps.
