Police issue warning after big jump in bicycle thefts in Fairfax County

Posted: Updated:
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. -

Bicycling is popular all over the DC metro area, but thieves are taking advantage. Fairfax County police report a 36 per cent increase in bike thefts, with 265 reported stolen in the county between September of 2011 and August of 2012, and 361 thefts between September of 2012 and August of 2013.

In the city of Fairfax, the Performance Bike Shop on Fairfax Boulevard was robbed overnight. Police say the front window was busted in, and somebody made off with a bike worth about $1200. Most of the stolen bikes are taken from garages that were either left unlocked or open.

Police are strongly advising residents to close and lock their garage doors. They suggest that you don't leave bicycles outside for days and nights of end, because thieves may be watching and like to target unused bikes. Also, consider installing motion sensor lights or alarms on your property.
