Passyunk Community Deals With Dog Owners Who Don't Clean Up

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Pick up after your dog, or else! That's the message that one neighborhood wants people to hear tonight, and they're promising a unique punishment for anyone who can't follow the rules.

Passyunk is a pet friendly community, but residents aren't happy with what pet owners are leaving behind. Now, they've decided to shame pet owners into cleaning up their dog's mess.

Better look out, there's a crusade in South Philly that's keeping close watch to make sure you're handling your dog's dirty business.

"How bad? It's extremely bad," says one resident.

"Lot of poop," says another. "People don't clean up after themselves."

"It's a smelly mine field," says a third. "It's been one of my pet peeves for a long time."

The problem's gotten so bad that Passyunkpost.com  founder and editor Albert Stumm has decided to out bad pet owners on his website when people send in pictures and video.

I'm glad they do that. I'm going to do that too," says a resident.

I'll take a picture with my cell and send it in," says another.

Already, video has surfaced of an offender allowing his pup to leave someone a present in their planter at Front and Siegel.

"This is an issue that I've decided to take up and I'm more than willing to shame people to change their behavior," says Albert Stumm.

This foul behavior isn't just a nuisance, it's against the law and punishable by a $300 fine.

Some signs in the South Philly area are even threatening to give offenders a taste of their own medicine. One sign threatens to rub the owner's face in dog excrement.

We decided to pound the pavement, careful of where we stepped. We had our eyes peeled, wondering who was responsible for some of the mess we saw next to the trees in the area. We spotted a pooch making his rounds, but his owner was ready with bag in hand.

Vincent says his dog Bella already took care of business, but he's still prepared. All the other pet owners that we saw had bags in hand. Maybe they've gotten the message: somebody's watching and ready to out them online if they don't clean up their pet's mess.

Some areas of South Philly have started putting in dog waste trash cans and bag dispensers, hoping that'll prompt people to clean up.
