Healing Field: 9/11 victims honored at Tempe Beach Park

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Wednesday will be a tough day for many people. It is the 12th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on our country. Thousands of people died.

Tempe is honoring those victims once again this year.

It is a sobering sight. Thousands of flags flying in the wind. Each one representing a life lost in the 9-11 attack.

"It's a very emotional day, a very emotional day."

Nancy Whetter and other flight attendants helped put up the flags for the memorial. She lost 19 crew members that day.

"The center of the field is the 1st responders and the 1st crew there that died... so in the middle of the field is the flight crew, so we took it upon ourselves to say a prayer," said flight attendant Nancy Whetter.

There would not be a healing field if it wasn't for volunteers. They considered this work an honor.

"It shows the magnitude of what happened to us and it's important that we honor the memories. Was it easy? No, but it's worth it," said volunteer Eric Martinez.

Volunteers put up two 2,977 flags in the ground at the Tempe Beach Park.

Every flag has a name tag. For example, one belongs to William Ward Hayes, 35-years-old from Rye, New York. He was a broker for Canter Fitzgerald.

The flag poles are 8 feet tall. The victims are from all walks of life – firefighters, police, pilots, flight attendants, to cooks and bankers.

There are teddy bears for the children who died.

"This means everything to me. I am here to honor my friends, I get to honor all those people that had to go through that day," said Ellie Lobel.

For Ellie Lobel and many others like her, it's a way to heal.

The ceremony starts at 5:46 a.m. Wednesday -- the time the first plane flew into the World Trade Center.
