Hillary Clinton Receives Liberty Medal

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A round of loud applause is received as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton receives the Liberty Medal.

"Thank you, Thank you," she says, as she accepts her prize.

Clinton accepted the award given to her based on her career and advocacy for women and girls. She talked about active citizenship and healthy debate on issues, including the issue on many people's minds, Syria.

"I'm very interested in listening to Hillary Clinton to see what she's saying about Syria. I'm looking forward to her running in 2016," said Judy Lobasso, before the ceremony.

"The President will address the nation shortly about the Assad regime's use of lethal chemicals against men women and children," Clinton said to the crowd, "that violates a universal norm at the heart of our global order and it demands a strong response from the international community led by the United States. This debate is good for our democracy."

As Clinton spoke though, protestors gathered outside the event.

"Hillary Clinton, hands off Syria. Hillary Clinton, hands off Syria," they chanted.

The group was hoping to have several messages heard regarding the United States and its stance on Syria.

"We're against the war on Syria. Syria is a sovereign nation and it's not our business to intervene," says Steve Pitrowski of Lower Providence.

Others we spoke to before the event also wanted Clinton to talk about Benghazi, where four Americans were killed at the US embassy.

"And I think she is going to speak about Benghazi as well. She's been crucified over that and we need to know her point of view," Charlene Gentile said. "She never really got to give [it]."
