She is only 8 years old, but Tara Sankner has quite an arm.
"My mom says that I'm a tough cookie," says Tara.
And she is tougher than anybody in her Fairfax County family imagined she would need to be. Tara has brain cancer. She is not quite halfway through 60 weeks of chemotherapy.
"Some days I'm not so tough, but some days I try to be tough," she says.
This past Sunday was one of the good days. Tara got a visit from Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon.
He plans to help Tara's family with medical bills by giving them $2,500 each time he scores a touchdown in the month of September. He came close Monday night against the Eagles.
The owner of Paisano's pizza, Fouad Qreitem, has quickly become a Tara fan. On Tuesdays, 10 percent of the cost of what you order can go directly to Tara and her family. Paisano's has 23 locations in Maryland and Virginia. Just call up on Tuesday at any of the locations and say, 'Let's take care of Tara" when you order.
September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
"The community is why we're in business,” says Qreitem. “It's not because of our smarts. It's nothing but the community. It's the least we could do is give back to community.”
