Teen in custody, charged with detonating explosive device at Mont. Co. public safety headquarters

Posted: Updated:

Montgomery County officials say a juvenile male is in custody for allegedly detonating an explosive device in the parking lot of public safety headquarters in Darnestown.

The teenager will be charged with possession and manufacturing an explosive device.

Police say the explosive went off at around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

People inside the building said they felt windows rattle and white smoke was seen from the area where the device was detonated.

No one was injured. The building did not have to be evacuated.

The teen, who was seen in the area at the time of the explosion, was detained and questioned. After reviewing security footage, investigators identified the teen as the person who ignited the device.

The public safety headquarters is the home to Montgomery County Fire, Police, Homeland Security, and components of the Department of Transportation.
