Drop in speed camera tickets after speed limits increased

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

An increase in speed limits is translating to a significant drop in speed camera tickets in the District.

Speed limits were increased by 5 miles-per hour on 6-busy roadways starting in December of 2012.

An analysis from AAA shows that during the first 7-months of this year, tickets from the camera site near Exit 1 on 295 plummeted from about 74,000 to just over 36,000 compared to the same time the year before.

That's a revenue loss of nearly $6 million.

The camera on Canal Road saw nearly a 60 percent drop in tickets and the one in the 2800 block of Benning Road was down nearly 87 percent.

AAA says there is no evidence that traffic safety was compromised as a result of the speed increases.
