NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Brooklyn Nets will retire the No. 5 jersey of current head coach and former franchise star Jason Kidd, the team announced.

"This is a very humbling honor and one that I will always cherish," Kidd said in a statement. "There can be no greater recognition of an athlete's time with any team than to have his number retired, and this gesture by the Nets organization validates a very significant portion of my career that was spent as a player with this franchise."

Kidd played for the then-New Jersey nets for six and a half seasons, leading them to the NBA finals in 2002 and 2003. In his 19-year career, Kidd holds averages of 12.6 points, 8.7 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 1.93 steals, according to the team.

Kidd currently ranks first in assists (4,620), steals (950), three-point field goals made (813), and triple-doubles (61) in the franchise's history, according to the Nets.

The 10-time All-Star also played for the Dallas Mavericks, the Phoenix Suns, and the New York Knicks, where he ended his playing career. He won an NBA championship in 2011 as a member of the Mavericks.

"This honor is richly deserved," Nets General Manager Billy King said in a statement. "Jason is firmly established in the Nets' record books as the greatest player in the team's NBA history, and the retirement of his #5 is a fitting conclusion to his legacy as a Nets' player."

The team will hold the jersey retirement ceremony on October 17, 2013, ahead of the squad's preseason game against the Miami Heat.

Kidd will become the sixth player in Nets history to have his jersey number retired. The others are: Drazen Petrovic (No. 3), John Williamson (No. 23), Bill Melchionni (No. 25), Julius "Dr. J" Erving (No. 32) and Charles "Buck" Williams (No. 52).
