Protest over fees charged to former Dr. Fata patients

ROCHESTER, Mich. (WJBK) -

A small but vocal group of demonstrators gathered outside of Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Saturday. They're upset that former patients and family members of those treated by Dr. Farid Fata are being charged hefty fees to receive copies of their medical records.

The former cancer doctor faces federal charges. He's accused of misdiagnosing and mistreating patients to, even giving some chemotherapy when they didn't need it, in order to defraud Medicare out of tens of millions of dollars. Protesters held signs that read "Free Our Medical Records," and "Crittenton Could Care Less."

"I've talked to people that have paid $358, $1179, $2000," says Jeff Berz. His father was a patient of Dr. Fata. "A lot of us can't afford that kind of price for medical records."

A spokesperson for Crittenton says it's standard procedure to bill for medical records and that they will send them for free if it's for continuing care. He adds that they're doing everything they can to work with those connected to the Fata case.

"I understand they just want it for free and that's understandable," said Brian Birney, a spokesperson for Crittenton. "But, there is a cost associated, we do work with a third party. It is not something that Crittenton is billing themselves or getting revenue in."

Other area hospitals have already waved any fees because of the circumstances of this case. The demonstrators hope Crittenton will do the same.

Dr. Fata, 48, pled not guilty to the charges. He remains in jail on a $9 million bond. He's due back in court on Oct. 18. Stay with Fox 2 and myfoxdetroit.com for updates on this developing story.
