Volunteers kickoff 'Obamacare' campaign on South Side

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Supporters of the Affordable Care Act are trying to clamp down on the controversy and confusion. Today in Chicago and across the country, volunteers fanned out to explain what "Obamacare" actually means.

This is what 30,000 square feet of five different types of organic kale, greens and berries looks like before it's on your plate. Good health starts with healthy living and that includes eating well says part time farmer and full time Roseland resident Fredrick Merchant.

"The farm we have here is kind of that same type of heart and zest for the people that can't afford things, holistic foods and organic foods so I've learned that I can go online and check it out for myself," said Merchant.

Merchant is talking about the Affordable Care Act also known as "Obamacare." The topic is what brought Merchant and David Elin from Get Covered America together on a Saturday afternoon.

"I do think there's a lot of information we don't know, a lot of concerns, whether or not the premiums are going to go up for people with existing coverage, that's one of our concerns, we still don't know what happens with the county and free healthcare for the populous," said Merchant.

"We are out here talking to folks about the new health insurance marketplace that opens up on October 1 and letting them know about what their options will be," said Elin, State Director at Enroll America and Get Covered America.

Elin and his team statewide are part of a nationwide door to door campaign that kicked off this weekend to educate consumers on the new health care options available under the Affordable Care Act.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers a state by state fact sheet on its website (HERE) for residents and employers but for those who haven't clicked just yet...

"Really just making sure we share with them the facts about what their options might be, letting them know that at that time they'll have the ability to choose a plan that's right for them and their family," said Elin.

"I don't support any adhering contracts put upon the people because the government thinks we need an anti-state, I think we need to take care of ourselves," said Merchant.
