2nd student on LI with MRSA

Posted: Updated:

FRAMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- A college student on Long Island has been diagnosed with MRSA. It's the second case reported on a Long Island college campus in as many days.

Officials at Farmingdale State College say a commuter student contracted the bacterial infection. They say there's no evidence the student got it on campus. As a precaution, the college issued a campus alert and ordered cleaning of classrooms and athletic facilities.

Newsday says the student is recovering at home after being diagnosed by his family physician.

On Wednesday, a student athlete on the Brookville campus of Long Island University was reported to have contracted MRSA. He's also recovering at home.

MRSA is a staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. It can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact, or sharing towels.
