State spends nearly $670K for new doors at Capitol

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

They can't solve the state's pension crisis, but they've got some really nice new doors at the state Capitol.

Three sets of copper-plated wooden doors costing nearly $670,000 have been installed on the west side of the Capitol.

Critics have said the doors are too costly for the state when the Illinois pension fund is underfunded by $100 billion. The ornate doors are part of a $50 million renovation project on the state Capitol building.

Governor Pat Quinn voiced concern Thursday about the expensive choice. Quinn spokeswoman Brooke Anderson said Thursday that the governor believes any capital projects should be conducted in a "prudent and cost-effective manner."

The doors were custom-made to resemble the original oak and black walnut doors that had bronze ornamentation. The building is a National Historic Landmark. The doors that were replaced were made of glass and metal.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
