A toddler and her grandmother were involved in a kidnapping and carjacking Thursday morning – but luckily, they are doing just fine thanks to an officer's quick thinking.

Police say that carjacker took off with the baby and her grandmother still in the car. He wouldn't let them get out and drove around for 7 miles until police stopped him.

Just 18-months-old, Fernanda Fierro survived a kidnapping and carjacking. She's now safe in her dad's arms.

"I was at work when my wife called me, I didn't know what to do I started driving like crazy," says Bernardo Fierro, the baby's father.

This all started when the mother, grandmother and daughter stopped at the grocery store near Alma School and 8th Avenue in Mesa.

Because it's so hot outside mom decided to go into Food City while grandmother and the 18-month-old stayed inside of the car with the air conditioner running. Police say that's when the suspect jumped in and took off.

Minutes later an officer in Tempe near Arizona Mills saw the SUV.

"The door shut and opened up again and this time I see a hand come out of it," says Officer Jeff Craft, Tempe Police.

After 28 years patrolling the streets, Officer Jeff Craft knew something wasn't right.

"I could now hear a woman screaming."

He pulled the car over and rescued the 18-month-old and grandmother. He did this even before Mesa Police could send out an amber alert.

"I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time, I'm thankful for that."

The suspect was taken to jail. Police believe he was under the influence.

"I'd like to thank everybody the quick response that really made a difference," says Fierro.

Police just released the suspect's name. He is 44-year-old Ralph Esposito. He facing possible charges of kidnapping and aggravated DUI.
