Crews continue to repair water main break on Clairmont Road

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Crews worked into the night to repair a water main break in Brookhaven.

The break is causing major problems along Clairmont Road near Barone Avenue. Officials closed Clairmont in both directions as crews worked to repair the severed water main.

The 30-inch water main break happened mid-morning Wednesday. Witnesses said that water spewed up from the ground onto the roadway.

DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan said that before the water main could be fixed, crews had to shut off numerous valves interconnected through a series of feeder pipes.

The water main break affected about a block and a half stretch of Clairmont Road between Interstate 85 and the Century Center Complex.

Thousands of motorists were detoured during the afternoon rush hour.

Crews hope to have the break repaired before Thursday morning's rush hour traffic, but the damage to the road will prevent Clairmont from reopening.

"In the morning, we might have two lanes navigable on the commute into work…but it will be several days before we can have this road completely opened," said Brennan.

Until then, drivers are urged to avoid the area as drivers are being re-routed.

The water main break didn't impact water flow to most of the area, with the exception of a nearby hotel.

This main water break comes as DeKalb County is undergoing a $1.3 billion upgrade to its' water and sewer pipes. Some of the pipes are reportedly up to 50 years old.
