BOWIE, Md. -

Authorities say three people were injured when a small plane crashed along a highway near a Prince George's County airport.

Maryland State Police say the single engine, four-seat aircraft crashed Monday afternoon along westbound U.S. Route 50 near Freeway Airport.

Prince George's County Assistant Fire Chief Alicia Francis says the plane went into the trees along the slow shoulder, but no one on the ground was injured. The three people aboard the plane were trapped temporarily. Francis says two men were flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore in critical condition and a woman was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center in serious condition.

The highway was closed in both directions for a time, but all eastbound lanes and some westbound lanes have reopened.

Federal authorities have been notified.

PG Fire Chief Marc Bashoor, Twitter@PGFD_Chief, tweeted out a picture from the scene.
