Owner of boat hit by DC Police boat glad no one was on board

Posted: Updated:
The video on YouTube shows a wild scene. A DC Police Harbor Patrol boat is speeding as it makes a turn and crashes into two boats docked on the Potomac River at the Georgetown waterfront.

The owners of the boat that was seriously damaged and nearly sank are Shari and Craig Saunders of McLean. They had let some friends borrow the boat Saturday, and the friends had docked the boat and gone ashore to eat dinner before the boat was hit.

Assistant Chief Lamar Greene tells Fox 5 he has seen the video.

He says it was an accident and the officer appears to have been accelerating and was too close to the boats for the maneuver.

Greene says the officer was responding to a call for a possible jumper or man in the water.

He says MPD has been in touch with the boat's owner.

The incident, he says, is under investigation.
