2 dead after fire inside White Plains YMCA

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police say two men were found dead after a fire inside a White Plains YMCA early Saturday morning.

Authorities say around 4:00 a.m., firefighters responded to the fire and found the body of one man on the fire floor and the other victim in the lobby behind the counter of the four-story brick facility located on at 250 Mamaroneck Avenue.

It took several hours for firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

According to the Associated Press, lodgers said they saw evidence of a violent struggle as they fled the building in White Plains, just north of New York City. They identified the two dead men as a security guard and a resident known for behavioral problems.

White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong initially said that investigators believed a murder and suicide had taken place.

Authorities say no suspects are being sought and haven’t released the names of the two dead men.

Dozens of other people sleeping in the building's residence hall evacuated safely. Many of them stood on the sidewalk across the street from the YMCA or sat at tables in front of a deli.

The Red Cross arrived to the scene and is assisting more than 100 people following the fire.
