APNewsBreak: DC councilmember under ethics inquiry

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON - Four people say they have been questioned by the District of Columbia's ethics board about the role of Councilmember and mayoral candidate Jack Evans in turning over a city-owned alley to George Washington University.

The people tell The Associated Press they were questioned about whether Evans did anything inappropriate when he introduced a bill to give the university the alley without conditions.

One of the people interviewed, Jackson Carnes, says Evans told him he was not demanding that GWU reimburse the city for the alley because he needed the university's support for his mayoral bid. Evans denies saying that to Carnes and says he's unaware of the ethics board inquiry.

Carnes and other community leaders wanted GWU to reimburse the city for the alley, which was valued at $2.8 million.
