Police: Suspect pushed man off Dunwoody balcony

Posted: Updated:
DUNWOODY, Ga. -

Police say one man is charged with throwing another man off of a fifth floor balcony to his death in Dunwoody.  Authorities originally believed 31-year-old Ike Herrington had jumped off the balcony of his apartment, but instead, they say 24-year-old Barrett Ricks pushed him.

Ricks lived at the Axis of Perimeter apartment complex near Perimeter Mall.  Authorities say he and Herrington knew each other, and the two got into a fight early Wednesday morning.  At some point, they say things got physical.

Dunwoody Police spokesman Tim Fecht said Ricks pushed Herrington, and also strangled him before the fight moved to the balcony.  Witnesses heard the commotion and the two men yelling at each other.

Police say Herrington, who had just moved to Atlanta from Mobile, Alabama, was dead by the time the first officers arrived.

The two men are described by police as casual acquaintances.

Ricks is charged with murder.  He's being held in the DeKalb County Jail.  Police say they have not determined a motive yet, and the investigation is ongoing.
