Arrest made in weekend hit-and-run accident

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta police say they've made an arrest in connection to a hit-and-run accident that left two women injured last weekend.

Last Friday night, police say Adrienne Smith and Brianna Johnson were sitting on a brick wall along Peeples Street when a white 2013 Ford Edge left the roadway and hit them.  The vehicle damaged the wall, and dragged the women up an embankment before hitting a fence on Atlanta Public Schools property.

The driver of the vehicle was seen running from the scene.  Police believed the vehicle he was driving was stolen from an Avis rental car parking lot.

Smith was left pinned under the vehicle, but was freed and both women were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.  Smith was critically injured, and her knee was partially severed.  Johnson suffered a broken pelvis.

On Thursday, police charged 38-year-old Byron Devon Perry in connection to the hit-and-run.  He faces nine charges, including serious injury by vehicle and hit and run for each victim.  Perry was on probation, and turned himself in to the Fulton County Jail.

Smith and Johnson are best of friends, and so are their mothers.  They say that will help all of them get through the recovery that's ahead of them.  When they get out of the hospital, both young ladies say they plan to enroll in school.
