Dozens demonstrate for higher wages for fast food workers

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Phoenix fast food workers walked off their jobs Thursday. They want $15 an hour and the right to form a union. Phoenix is one of 50 cities across the country where this took place.

"Trying to get better wages and conditions for the workers," said Tom McDermott.

"The minimum doesn't help pay for our bills. People got bills, house payments, car insurance, all of our utilities and the minimum wage doesn't cover it," said Carmen Raines.

This may be the beginning to one of the largest strikes to ever hit the fast food industry. Protestors in Phoenix are demanding $15 an hour to work in a long list of places, including: Burger King, Del Taco, Taco Bell, Church's Chicken, Burger King, Wendy's, IHOP, and Panda Express.

Local clergy, elected officials and everyday people were street side demonstrating.

"People are working 40 plus hours, some people working 80 hours a week and they can't make ends meet or they have no time for anything else. All they do is work all week," said Jesus Quiroz.

This whole thing took place where Grand meets 7th Avenue and Van Buren, because it's such a high traffic area – also, its close proximity to Church's Chicken and McDonald's on the other corner where the protest is taking place.

"Trying to bring it up to give them a livable wage to where they have some disposable income to do more things that stimulate our economy," said McDermott.

"Corporate profits are up, stock market is up, these peoples wages are not and these are the people who actually support the economy, supply and demand and they have a right to a decent and fair wage," said Pat Montroy.

This central Phoenix McDonald's said they hadn't had anyone as of yet walk out.

In respect to inflation -- one report by the Economic Policy Institute stated that the minimum wage is lower today than it was in 1963.
