Man shot, killed by police in Springfield barricade situation

Posted: Updated:

A man has been shot and killed by police at his home after a barricade situation in Springfield Thursday.

Fairfax County police say they were called to the 7900 block of Pebble Brook Court at around 2:40 p.m. for a report of a dispute reportedly between the man, 46-year-old John Geer, and his longtime girlfriend.

"All I know is they responded to a domestic dispute,” said Bud Walker of Fairfax County Police. “When they arrived, the other party had departed and the adult male was inside alone. There were reports that he had a weapon of some sort inside and so the officers attempted to negotiate with him, either through a window or a through a door."

Officer Walker says after about 40 minutes of negotiations, a Fairfax County patrol officer fired at least one shot that killed the man. Police are not saying why the shot or shots were fired.

"We are investigating this as an officer-involved shooting,” said Walker. “When the hostage rescue vehicle approached and made entry and the folks that were going to render aid went inside, they did discover the subject inside deceased.

The neighborhood surrounding the home was sealed off by police for about two hours.

"Now that our special operations have ceased, the criminal investigation will begin as well as an administrative investigation,” said Walker.

No one else was hurt.
