Kittens on subway tracks cause service problems in Brooklyn

Two kittens roaming the subway tracks in Brooklyn caused delays and service suspensions on the B and Q lines Thursday afternoon, the MTA said.

Cops and subway workers spotted the kittens on the Coney Island-bound tracks at Church Avenue. They zipped around very close to the electrified third rail.

The elusive felines prompted someone to request the shutdown of power, caused trains to bypass certain stations and not run along the line for a time.

The MTA initially said the NYPD asked for power to be turned off, but the police said a transit worker made the request, according to the New York Times.

The owner of the kittens tried to get them to come back by luring them with food, but they eventually ran away, the AP reported.

The MTA restored service about an hour later, but delays persisted for hours as crews continued to look for the cats and train operators were advised to proceed with caution, the AP reported.

In the evening police officers found the kittens under the third rail of an express track, placed them in crates, and brought them out of the subway system.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
