Maryland’s infant mortality rate dropped to a new all-time low in 2012.
The state’s infant mortality rate in 2012 was 6.3 per 1,000 live births, down six percent from 2011, announced Governor Martin O’Malley.
The decline was driven largely by a reduction in the African American infant mortality rate which dropped 14 percent, to 10.3 per 1,000 live births.
The infant mortality rate in Maryland fell by 21 percent between 2008 and 2012, resulting in 159 fewer infant deaths in 2012 than in 2008.
