Metra Union Pacific West Line service halted after man fatally struck

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man who was struck and killed by a freight train in west suburban Wheaton on Thursday morning has been identified.

An eastbound freight train struck the man on the Union Pacific tracks near North Hale Street, according to Wheaton police. The crash did not happen at a crossing.

Lt. Bob Miller of the Wheaton police said a Metra train crew called about 7:20 a.m. after seeing the body between Washington and Chase, behind the Billy Graham Center Museum on the Wheaton College campus.

Darren S. Schumacher, 37, of Wheaton was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the DuPage County Coroner's office.

Wheaton police are investigating.
