Juiced about juicing

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

An underdog has moved to the front of the pack in most household kitchens.

In the race to become the most expensive appliance, blenders are closing the pack on the most popular kitchen tool.

The Vitamix blender pulverizes vegetables, shaves ice so smooth it makes ice cream, and spins so fast it cooks up soup.

It has started a juicing revolution, spurred imitators, and has even gained groupies who swear by it.

The blender costs almost $500. Yet people are taking them home like they're going out of style.

Kathy Grant is a shopper who bought the blender at the Tampa Bay Home Show.

"I've pined for one for so long," she said.

After a little bit of prep work, Kathy can make hot tortilla soup in less than 15 minutes.

The industry brings in more than a half a billion dollars a year, and counting.

Dietitians agree blenders and juicers are an excellent way of sneaking vegetables into things like smoothies and ice cream.

Consumer Reports has given the Vitamix blender high marks.

It also recommends a more affordable model by Kitchen Aid; the KSB65.

Stores sell it for around $90.
