Sen. McCain on Syria: We need to 'reverse this horrible situation'

PHOENIX -

Arizona Senator John McCain is weighing in on the showdown with Syria. He spoke about the situation today during a roundtable discussion in Phoenix.

John McCain said he doesn't know anyone who supports sending U.S. troops to Syria. But he did say the government needs to take decisive action to reverse the momentum in that country.

As the crisis in Syria continues to escalate. Arizona Senator John McCain said Wednesday it's time to put extreme pressure on Syrian president Bashar Assad.

"We need to reverse the momentum that is now in Bashar Assad's favor," said Sen. McCain.

McCain spoke at a roundtable discussion with the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, but answered questions about the conflict in Syria and possible military strikes by the U.S.

"It's not confined to Syria. It's becoming a regional conflict and one that United States national security interests are being threatened."

McCain says the conflict in Syria has the potential to destabilize the entire region -- and that's why he says the U.S. has to do something soon.

"The president of the United States said two years ago that Bashar Assad must go. But his spokesperson has announced that this has nothing to do with regime change. I don't know how you reconcile those two positions."

The senator says one possibility -- missile strikes against Assad's 6 airfields to knock out Assad's air power and help the freedom fighters.

"We could get those weapons to the right people and we could reverse this horrible situation that exists."

McCain visited Syria in a secret trip in May. He met with commanders from the rebel forces. He says they are risking their lives for freedom and need the help of the United States.
