2005 internal investigation kept from jurors in Chrisman trial

Posted: Updated:

A former Phoenix police officer accused of killing an unarmed man could take the stand next week. Richard Chrisman is expected to tell his side of the story.

Wednesday, the judge ruled a controversial video of Chrisman won't be shown to the jury. That video landed Richard Chrisman on the Brady list.

It's a list of officers who have had credibility issues.

It happened back in 2005. Jurors won't get to see this video of Richard Chrisman planting a crack pipe on a homeless woman. Chrisman claims the whole thing was a practical joke and admitted to making a mistake during an internal investigation.

Prosecutors wanted to show it to the jury saying it shows Chrisman has lied on the job before.

But Chrisman's attorney says that's not true. He says Chrisman immediately told the truth and was only suspended for a day. The judge ruled jurors won't get to see the video.

Prosecutors also want to use text messages found on Chrisman's phone. Those messages were sent before the shooting happened. The judge could rule on that next week.

The trial will continue on Tuesday morning after Labor Day.
