PHOENIX -

What was supposed to be a fun sleepover for a couple of young teenagers ended up in a nightmare for all involved. One of the teens accidentally shot his friend and almost killed him.

"This is where his bed was, all his medical gear, a tree stand of meds, he was covered in tubes. I sat in that chair. That was my bed," says mom Kristine Younger.

Kristine Younger spent 39 nights sleeping in that chair two years ago, helping her son Ethan recover from a gunshot wound.

"I laid here for most of the beginning of the trauma. This is the ICU - I saw my nurses looking through the window and those doors," says Ethan Younger.

Her son is walking again after a long painful recovery. Ethan limps but he can walk. He was shot in the pelvic area two years ago, and the shooter was a friend.

"They had taken a shotgun off the wall and not knowing if it was loaded, another friend fired it and hit Ethan."

He was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital. Ethan was bleeding badly.

"I saw him in the trauma bay and I saw he had no color to him. We started to lose it."

But day by day Ethan got better and stronger. He will be able to do his favorite sports soon.

Kristine does have a message for parents -- if you have guns in your house, make sure they are secured.
