WASHINGTON -

D.C. police have arrested a man in the shooting death of community activist Timothy Dawkins.

22-year-old Todd Green of Southeast D.C. is charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection to the death of 24-year-old Dawkins.

Dawkins was shot and killed on the 4200 block of 4th Street, SE, last Wednesday.

His family says he was an innocent victim who was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight.

On Monday night, dozens of Dawkins’ friends and family gathered outside the William Lockridge library in Southwest D.C. to remember him.

Many spoke about the young man who they say was destined for greatness. They recounted stories of how he helped the elderly, spoke truth to power, and at one point, studied to become a preacher.

Dawkins' cousin, Ashura Goines, says Dawkins just wanted to make a difference.

"He was trying to do right for the people,” he says. “He was trying to make sure that everybody in D.C., all the young guys, become good guys."

Dawkins' family says while they are pleased there has been an arrest, they are still in pain and shock.

"When this happened to him, it just reminded me of Martin Luther King [Jr.], a man fighting for justice and going down for nothing,” says Douglas Dawkins, Timothy's father. “I just got to keep iterating that something needs to be done."

Police continue to investigate the shooting and say there could be more arrests.

Dawkins was married with a two-year-son.

Funeral arrangements are still being made.
