PATH train riders witness shooting

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A wild scene aboard a busy PATH train from New York City to Jersey City early Sunday morning and although the shooting happened just before 5:00 a.m., eyewitnesses tell Fox 5 the train was packed. Many of them people coming home from a night out in New York City when suddenly everything changed.

“I heard gunshots and I ran,” said a PATH train passenger.

Chaos and confusion also running rampant aboard a busy Jersey City bound PATH train when three people were shot.

“We heard this lady screaming and so we were kind of scared and we didn't know what was going on.”

Eyewitness Walt Sysavane says the shooting began in the train and then spilled out onto the platform at the Pavonia PATH Station in Jersey City.

“The doors were about to close and like if we were to let the doors close, the suspect would have probably had us all hostage.”

Witnesses tell Fox 5 that a man bumped into a woman while on the train. While arguing, that man then shot the woman in the ankle and another man in the hand.

Also shot was the gunman. Police are not saying how he was shot.

“We're still going through video analytics to determine the sequence of events, it’s still a fluid investigation,” said Louie Koumoutsos, Chief of the Port Authority Police.

Police say the gunman is Tari Turpin of East Orange. Officer arrested him just a few blocks away from the station soon after the shooting. He was in a white tank top as police helped him onto a gurney.

Turpin was shot in the leg.

Police found his gun in the station. Witnesses say this is one ride they won’t soon forget.

“It's my first day taking the path and my last day taking the path,” said one rider.

Police tell Fox 5 that suspect Tari Turpin was illegally possessing that gun, they say, he should have never had a gun in the first place due to his criminal history.

Right now he is facing assault and weapons charges.
