PHOENIX -

A driver who hit and injured a pregnant woman and her friend early Sunday morning has been arrested.

About 2:30 a.m., a man in a 2010 Dodge Charger accelerated through the parking lot of the Bukkanas Bar at 16th Ave and Camelback. He struck two adult females -- one of whom is reportedly pregnant.

The Charger then struck an occupied parked vehicle before fleeing the area.

The suspect was followed by officers and a police helicopter until he stopped at 3300 E Van Buren St. He was then taken into custody.

Impairment is suspected in the driver, identified as 25-year-old Guadalupe Castaneda. According to court documents, he admitted to drinking 30 beers over the course of the evening. His license was also suspended.

Castaneda claimed he didn't know he hit anyone, instead he said he thought he hit a garbage can.

Turns out the Dodge Charger wasn't even his -- it had been left running in the parking lot while the driver purchased something from a food stand. That driver, who wasn't known to Castaneda, wants to prosecute and reported the car as stolen.

Castaneda is facing charges of assault, aggravated DUI, endangerment, unlawful flight, and failure to stay at the scene of an injury collision.

The pregnant woman, reportedly 4 months along, suffered bone fractures, broken ribs and bruised lungs. The fetus is in critical condition.
