Small plane crashes in Bowie; 4 escape uninjured

BOWIE, Md. -

A single-engine airplane crashed in a cornfield near an airport in Bowie and all four occupants escaped without injury.

A spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire Department says the crash happened Saturday morning before 10 a.m. near the Freeway Airport. The Maryland State Police says the plane, a Cessna Skyhawk, was trying to land when the aircraft veered from the runway and wound up in the cornfield.

Federal Aviation Administration records show the plane was built in 1985 and owned by the airport. The chief pilot of the airport's flight school says the people in the plane had rented it for a flight.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
