Events Saturday To Mark 50th Anniversary Of March On Washington

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

That's when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. People in our area are already remembering this landmark in the civil rights movement.

Martin Luther King III was in Philadelphia on Friday, the eve of the 50th anniversary March on Washington celebration. He was the keynote speaker at a commencement ceremony where more than 100 high school dropouts came back and graduated.

Across the area, thousands of people like John Stevens bought bus tickets so they can remember the moment in civil rights history. The chance to mark King's historic march did resonates with him.

Stevens was in the military in 1963 when King recited his famous speech. But Stevens was at the 25th anniversary in 1983. A picture of him was featured in Ebony magazine.

For many like Stevens, Saturday's march is a continuation of that historic day half a century ago. And there's hope the dream stays alive, FOX 29's Leigh Scheps reported.

The march put its stamp on history, and the U.S. Postal Service is honoring that historical event.

The post office unveiled a "March on Washington Forever" stamp Friday and, for the first time ever, the artwork was introduced piece by piece on Facebook.
