COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -

Hundreds of people gathered at an Austell church on Friday to remember a young athlete who died after suffering an injury in a football game.

De'Antre Turman, a cornerback at Creekside High School in Fairburn, died after fracturing vertebrae in his upper spinal cord during a scrimmage last Friday.

Friends and family remembered Turman as an intelligent 16-year-old with a bright future.

"He was a good kid, he was a big inspiration in people's eyes," said his father, James Turman. "He was just all you want in a kid. You know: bright and beautiful, intelligent."

The high school junior reportedly had been offered a scholarship to play football at the University of Kentucky and was likely to receive more offers.

"Football was good too, but I wanted him to get a college degree for his mother. She passed away in 2012," his father said. "I just wanted him to be the best and do all of that for his mother.  He's going back with her now; he's going to be playing up there now."

Besides excelling on the field, friends described Turman as an excellent student and a kind soul. The mourners included opponents from other schools, who remembered him not as an adversary, but as a friend.

Turman's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Word of Faith Family Cathedral in Austell.
