CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities in Cherokee County are investigating a carjacking that ended with the death of one of the suspects.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, three suspects carjacked a vehicle with the owner inside.

The car's owner was placed in the backseat. Police say that one of the suspects was hitting the victim in the head with a firearm when the gun discharged. A bullet apparently struck the driver in the back, according to police.

Moments later, the car went over a guardrail and into some trees off of Highway 92 near Wade Green Road.

One suspect died at the scene and two other suspects fled on foot, deputies said.

The owner of the car was taken to the hospital with head injuries.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death of the deceased suspect.

No names have been released. Police did say that it did not appear to be a random act and that one of the suspects is known by the victim.

Deputies are searching for the suspects who fled.
