Classes resume for McNair Discovery students, faculty

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Two days after a gunman entered their campus, students returned to a DeKalb County school on Thursday.

Even before sunrise, the digital board outside of McNair Discovery Academy on Second Avenue read ‘Welcome Back' for the 800 students and 70 faculty and staff returning to its hallways and classroom Thursday morning.

Just like any other start to the day, crossing guards waved parents and students across the streets and onto the school campus. Nearby, school buses pulled up McNair to drop off students on time for class.

DeKalb County school officials announced on Wednesday that classes would resume on Thursday; two days after a 20-year-old man walked into the school armed with an AK-47 and triggered a scare that sent students, faculty and staff fleeing for their lives.

That man -- Michael Brandon Hill -- surrendered to police without incident. He know faces six charges -- five of which are felonies. Both family and acquaintances who know him describe as "troubled."

On Wednesday, about 145 students of the McNair Academy attended classes at McNair High School. Many of the students erupted in cheers when DeKalb school officials announced they would be returning to the academy the next day.

School officials said the classrooms were packed on Thursday as parents and faculty said they were ready to move forward.

Counseling will be available for students through the end of week. The staff will then evaluate if more will be needed.
