Glamping: Camping out at luxury Manhattan hotels

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Keep the booze, the marshmallows, and whatever romance comes with sleeping beneath the stars but ditch all the fumbling with wet matches, the pairing of tent poles with canvas loops, and the laying of your head on hard earth and you get "glamping."

Some Manhattan hotels are marketing their rooftops as campsites.

It's $2,000 per night at the AKA Central Park.

Glampers with a smaller budget pay $300 for a pitched tent at Affinia Gardens.

You aren't stuck in the middle of nowhere in the rain with fraying nerves, charred burgers and poison ivy. You can sleep outside but escape to world-class restaurants, different people, and a roof over your head whenever you please.

At least three Manhattan hotels now offer glamping experiences. No understanding of knots, bug-spray, Gore-Tex or a first-aid kit required.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.
