Police Say They Shot Suspect After He Pulled Gun On Them

PHILADELPHIA -

Breaking news right now from North Philadelphia, a suspect is killed by Philadelphia Police. He was shot after cops tried to pull a car over and the situation got out of control. One suspect is dead and another is in custody tonight.

Police say this all happened around 7:30 p.m. at 17th and Glenwood Streets when they tried to stop a Buick after several traffic violations.

The suspects kept going, so police called in their chopper to follow by the air. Down a few blocks the speeding suspects crashed into a van with two adults and three kids in it. They raced off without looking back.

The suspect finally crashed into a building on the 2200 block of Glenwood. Both got out of the vehicle.

Then, the passenger pulled a gun on police and an officer fired, hitting him at least once in the chest and torso area. He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police arrested the driver and took him to homicide.

"Once we get the scene processed we're going to search the entire car. There's no telling what else we find. We know now there's at least two loaded handguns in the vehicle," says Chief Inspector Scott Smalls.

There were no other injuries. Internal Affairs, along with Homicide are investigating this shooting.
