Injured Cobb sheriff undergoes surgery after crash

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren is reported to be in good spirits and talking with visitors after undergoing surgery for a fractured vertebrae on Monday.

The surgery is related to injuries the 66-year-old sheriff sustained when he and his chief deputy were hurt in a multi-vehicle crash on I-75 last Thursday.

His daughter, Liz, posted the following to Sheriff Warren's Facebook page: He is alert and in good spirits, but currently unable to respond to (Facebook) messages. He appreciates each one."

Warren and Chief Deputy Milton Beck were driving along Interstate 75 in Atlanta Thursday afternoon when the vehicle they were in was hit by a truck.

Authorities have said the driver of the truck that was pulling a trailer lost control and veered across the freeway. He was charged with failure to maintain lane.

The wreck happened shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday. According to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Franka Young, Sheriff Neil Warren and Chief Deputy Milton Beck were in the HOV lane on I-75 near Northside Drive in Fulton County when they were struck by a pickup truck pulling a trailer.

Warren and Beck suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, officials said.

The condition of the driver of the truck was not known.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident.
