Cops in New Jersey conduct school shooting drill

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Liberty Middle School in West Orange, New Jersey, played center stage as actors helped provide a very real-life emergency scenario on Tuesday. In the drill, four gunmen entered a packed school building and opened fire. Inside teachers and students hid in their classrooms as cops ran in followed by a team of SWAT members.

Moments later, a vehicle parked in the school parking lot was packed with fireworks to demonstrate an IED explosion.

Inside, authorities took down the gunmen while the school principal got shot and killed. Other students were wounded in the incident and carried out to safety.

Outside the police crime tape Steven Savage played a terrified father who had his 13-year-old son inside while the shooters were on the loose.

Sgt. John Morella with the West Orange Police Department said his agency worked with state and federal authorities and conducted what was the largest active school drill ever done in New Jersey -- possibly the country.

He said that these types of drills will help law enforcement be as prepared as possible for the real thing.

The rill was funded by the Department of Homeland Security for $140,000. Video of the drill may be used to train law enforcement around the country for similar events.
