Police locate driver, vehicle in Waldorf hit-and-run of man in wheelchair

Posted: Updated:
WALDORF, Md. -

The accident shocked the Waldorf community. A 35-year-old Charles County man in a wheelchair trying to cross the street 11 p.m. Saturday was struck and sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Now the sheriff's office says investigators have located a white Ford Windstar van they believe hit the wheelchair.

They have also spoken to the 28-year-old owner of the van and say they are confident she was driving the vehicle the night of the hit-and-run. Charges against her are pending.

Officials have not identified the victim, but a friend of his tells FOX 5 she was shocked to learn someone had struck her friend and did not stick around to help.

Chatrice Webb says she often pushes her friend in the wheelchair to run errands nearby. She wonders if the driver did not come forward sooner because of issues with a driver's license or missing tags.

The victim has been released from the hospital and is said to be home resting comfortably.

The sheriff's office and the office of the state's attorney are conferring on what charges would be appropriate in this case.
