Dionne Miller's `Happenings at Halas' - August 19

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Back at Halas Hall for the first time since the spring and Bears headquarters has gotten a significant upgrade--though the renovations remain a work in progress. As does this team.

Practice was pretty much closed, though we were able to see the team stretch and run a couple of individual drills. No real glimpse of what the team ran today, but Marc Trestman quickly explained that the Bears were pleased with what they saw from Jordan Mills and Kyle Long.

The rookies will start on the offensive line again this Friday in Oakland--the final dress rehearsal for Jay Cutler and the first string offense. Cutler will play at least the first half, perhaps more. Josh McCown in the 3rd quarter and newly acquired Jordan Palmer in the 4th. Palmer and veteran Trent Edwards were signed to add QB depth after third stringer Matt Blanchard went down with an injury.

"I was in the office interviewing interns," Palmer said of the moment he got the call out of civilian life. Palmer works at a marketing firm but had a workout with the Bears earlier this summer and clearly they liked what they saw. He had a good preseason with Jacksonville last year, but was cut before the regular season. And of course, he has a brother in the league (Carson Palmer QB with Arizona)- so its in his genes.

Edwards was working out and hoped to get a call. He actually watched the game Thursday, saw Blanchard go down and thought perhaps Chicago would come calling. He was right. Trestman said the plan with Blanchard is not set yet, but he'd like to carry at least 3 quarterbacks into the regular season, maybe four. Heaven forbid the need for that many QB's would ever become reality but if called upon, you want a backup who has spent time in the room and knows the offense. Especially Trestman's. We've all heard just how tough it is to digest. We'll hear from Cutler Tuesday so stay tuned for an update on how the first string is progressing.

Speaking of progress, linebacker DJ Williams is improving, but there is still not a definitive timetable for his return. Williams suffered a calf injury in the 4th practice of camp and though he's out of a walking boot, it could be 12-14 days before he can practice. And now his conditioning can start to come into question. There is a good possibility rookie Jonathan Bostic will be starting in week 1. Defensive Co-ordinator Mel Tucker said when it comes to that time, whoever is healthy will line up and play. But Bostic has impressed...no one is going to deny that. Not sure what it will take for him to be ready for Cincinnati, but if Williams is a no go, he'll have to figure it out quick.
