A Waldorf man is in the hospital after getting mowed down by a hit and run driver.
He was struck while trying to cross busy St Charles Parkway at St Thomas Drive in his wheelchair at 11 Saturday night .
Witnesses say a white truck, possibly a Ford, hit the man and fled.
"We arrived on the scene and the victim was airlifted to a local hospital. His condition at first appeared to be life threatening.. but he has since been upgraded to stable, " Kristen Timko of the Charles County Sheriff's Office says.
A store clerk who had just waited on the man before he was hit, took the news hard.
" Actually it was like I was hit in the stomach. I've been. I've been working just about every day recently and he's comes in every night.. he's like a regular fixture here," he said.
There is a cross walk at the intersection, but investigators don't know if the victim was riding in it when he was hit.
Several motorists stopped to help the man, and gave police a description of the truck that may have been involved.
" The information from witnesses indicates it was a white truck Evidence we gathered it that it may have been a Ford.. possibly a truck, with front end damage. After the crash, the vehicle's headlight was rendered inoperative."Timko says.
Police have put up a traffic alert sign along the parkway , hoping someone who saw the accident near the Smallwood Lake Park
will come forward.
