Burglary suspect dies after lighting another home on fire

Updated:
PHOENIX -

A typical burglary call turned deadly when a house near 67th Avenue and Thomas caught on fire.

Police first responded to a burglary call, but when they arrived, the suspect was gone.

Just a few doors down, police were told the suspect was in the attic after the homeowner heard him making noise upstairs.

The suspect told police he was armed and as they entered, police say he lit the house on fire.

Firefighters were unable to save the home and officers say the suspect died in the attic.

Neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Police are continuing to investigate.
