CHEVY CHASE, Md. -

Update- Maryland State Police say the suspect is 53 year old Robert Allen Fugate of Sparrows Point, MD.

It was a police chase from the Baltimore area into the District. More than two dozen police vehicles chasing a suspect along Wisconsin Avenue in Northwest D.C. Friday night.

As it was ongoing, we learned they were coming right by us. Like dozens of other people who lined the sidewalks of Wisconsin Avenue, we watched as the suspect just kept on going despite a huge trail of police right behind him.

Officers managed to lay a spike strip down earlier in their pursuit, which blew out his tires of the Jeep Liberty.

The driver started to run from police in Baltimore County just after 7:30 p.m. and he led them along the Beltway through Montgomery County and into D.C.

One witness said, “He came by with his rims, no tires, and it felt like we were in L.A.”

And just like those Los Angeles car chases we see all the time, people lined up Wisconsin Avenue with cell phones rolling on it all.

The car finally came to a stop on Wisconsin Avenue just over the Maryland line in Chevy Chase. The suspect was apprehended, cuffed and on the ground. Police say he was wanted in connection with several felonies.

“It was very unusual,” said Nikou Golchin. “You don't really see that in this area -- that many cops. So it was definitely a bit of a surprise.”

“Everyone in the restaurant is ducking down,” said Scott Wagner, another person nearby the scene. “We're under the table. We didn't know what was going on. We thought we heard gunshots and we were worried someone might come in the restaurant. So we were under there a couple of minutes until we saw the cops had it under control.”

There were no gunshots and no one reported injured except for the suspect who was banged up and bandaged by paramedics before he was hauled off to be processed.
