David Oyelowo: It Became A Major Social Moment

Posted: Updated:

David Oyelowo stars in the number one movie in the country, "Lee Daniel's The Butler". The actor, who is from the UK, talked to Steve and Maria about shooting some of the intense scenes for the movie, including what is now being referred to as "the slap".

In the movie, Oyelowo's on the receiving end of a very famous hand, one belonging to Oprah. "She wanted to slap me for real! She had a balled fist and she thought it was one take so yeah I had to say 'no, we're going to be doing it a few times." Davis also shared what it was like sharing scenes with Miss Winfrey. "Oprah didn't turn up on that set...she just came in as Gloria Gaines. She left all of whatever you would consider to be Oprah at the door."

Having been born and raised in the UK, David said he knew a lot about this country's civil rights battles...more than others who would probably know about it. "I'm shocked about how many Americans who've lived here don't know about it as well. At least I have the excuse of not being from here...they're not aware of it which unfortunately it's not taught as well as it might in schools."

Fun Facts About David Oyelowo:

  • Oyelowo was born in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, to Nigerian parents.
  • He first attended a youth theatre after being invited by a girl to whom he was attracted. He then studied theatre studies for A level at City and Islington College and his teacher suggested he should become an actor.
  • Oyelowo is best known for playing MI5 officer Danny Hunter in the British TV drama series Spooks (known in North America as MI-5) from 2002 to 2004.
  • In 2007, Oyelowo was the reader for John le Carré's The Mission Song. Audiofile Magazine stated: "Think of David Oyelowo as a single musician playing all the instruments in a symphony. That is essentially what he manages in this inspired performance of John le Carré's suspense novel.
