Silver line test train derails at low speed

VIENNA, Va. -

Officials are investigating the low-speed derailment of a test train on Metrorail's new silver line.

Dulles Rail Project Executive Director Pat Nowakowski tells The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/19ivw0i ) that the front axle of the train, which was traveling about 5 mph, left the track Tuesday after it hit a mechanism designed to derail trains leaving areas where they are supposed to be. He says there are indicators to alert operators that they are approaching the derailer.

Nowakowski says no injuries were reported. He says this was the first derailment since test trains began running on the first phase of the Metrorail extension last year.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is building the $5.6 billion rail line, recently announced an eight-week delay in the completion of the first phase.
